Mendieta: Barca should have sacked Koeman earlier

Gaizka Mendieta believes Barcelona should have sacked Ronald Koeman earlier to prevent negative dynamics from developing at Camp Nou.

Barca parted company with Koeman on Wednesday following a 1-0 LaLiga defeat to Rayo Vallecano, on the back of a home Clasico loss against Real Madrid.

Koeman replaced Quique Setien in August 2020 but has failed to make an impact as he battled with Barca s dire financial situation, which led to Lionel Messi departing for Paris Saint-Germain.

The Blaugrana were ninth in the table ahead of a clash with Alaves on Saturday and have lost two of their three Champions League Group E matches.

Sergi Barjuan has stepped in as caretaker head coach and club legend Xavi is expected to be named as Koeman s successor on a permanent basis…

Wenger urges Arsenal to surround talented Arteta with experienced support

Arsene Wenger believes Mikel Arteta s great future must be nurtured with a strong backroom team if Arsenal make the inexperienced Spaniard their new head coach.

The Gunners have held talks with their former captain and are expected to appoint him to replace Unai Emery.

Arteta, 37, spent five seasons at Emirates Stadium as a player before retiring and taking up a coaching position with Manchester City in 2016.

He is well-regarded after working as Pep Guardiola s understudy but ex-Arsenal boss Wenger said the club would have to take measures to counteract his lack of experience.

I am an Arsenal supporter and at the moment I support the manager in charge. The manager in charge is [Freddie] Ljungberg, Wenger told reporters in Doha.

When Arteta will…

Big decisions went our way, Bruce admits

Hull City manager Steve Bruce admitted that his side benefitted from a series of refereeing decisions in Saturday s 1-0 win over West Ham.

A debatable penalty for a foul on Robbie Brady – which the winger duly converted by sending Jussi Jaaskelainen the wrong way – was enough to secure back-to-back Premier League victories for Steve Bruce s side for the first time since October 2008.

But the decision sparked controversy as Brady went down somewhat easily following an aerial challenge with Joey O Brien, with referee Kevin Friend deeming that there had been enough contact to award the spot-kick.

West Ham searched in vain for an equaliser, and will consider themselves unlucky not to have been awarded at least one penalty of their own, with handballs from Curtis Davies…

Prediction: Vitoria vs Botafogo

Best Odds: 11/10

Bookmaker:

With a spot in the quarter-finals of this year’s Copa do Brasil hanging in the balance late on Wednesday night, Vitoria will welcome Botafogo to the Barradao.

Vitoria

Starting with the hosts, while Vitoria might have cruised their way to a Serie A return this season, Thiago Carpini’s men have drastically struggled to find any kind of stability. Falling to a 1-0 loss when they travelled to Botafogo for their first-leg showdown on May 2nd, the Bahia-based outfit are enduring a real domestic nightmare. Putting in another downbeat performance last week as they suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of Vasco, the former Sao Paulo boss has a real headache on his hands at the Barradao. Collecting just a single point from any of their opening …

After their successful league campaign and Copa del Rey triumph i…

Premier League Preview: Stoke City v Liverpool

Liverpool travel to Stoke City on Sunday still seeking a first league win at the Britannia Stadium.

Although the Merseyside club have twice run out winners in League Cup ties at the ground, famously recording an 8-0 success in November 2000, they have failed to win on five top-flight visits since Stoke were promoted to the Premier League in 2008.

Liverpool have, in fact, been beaten in three successive league games at Stoke, but will still start as favourites this weekend given their impressive season to date.

Brendan Rodgers men sit fourth in the table, six points behind leaders Arsenal, and boast the league s most prolific scorer in Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan forward has 20 goals from 15 starts one more than the entire Stoke team have managed in 20 outings to d…
