Perth Glory lure Herd to A-League

Perth Glory have continued their preparations for the 2016-17 A-League season after signing Australian Chris Herd.

Former Aston Villa utility and three-time Socceroo Herd arrives in Perth on a one-year deal, joining fellow recruits and Australia internationals Rhys Williams and Adam Taggart at the club.

Herd without an international cap since 2014 made 23 appearances for Chesterfield after moving to the League One outfit as a free agent in September last year, having been released by Villa, where he spent five years.

I m thrilled to be coming home and re-joining some former team-mates of old and working with Kenny Lowe, the 27-year-old said via the club s official website.

Pulling on the purple for Perth Glory has been something I ve contemplated for a …

Downing out to maintain good form

Stewart Downing says that as long as he continues his current form, it will be hard for Brendan Rodgers to leave him out of the Liverpool side.

Downing has attracted much criticism for his performances since making a 20 million pound move from Aston Villa to Anfield in the summer of 2011, with youngster Raheem Sterling and then nominal full-back Jose Enrique chosen ahead of him in the wider midfield roles this season.

However, a recent up-turn in form has seen the 28-year-old win back his place in the starting XI, with the winger stating he has used Rodgers public criticism of him earlier this season as motivation to improve, particularly with the Reds strengthening once again in January.

When the manager gave me a change again, it was probably the last one I w…

Spanish daily Chelsea are keeping tabs on Malaga striker Salomon Rondon.

The Blues are looking to sign a replacement for Didier Drogba and the Venezuelan forward is one of the players they are interested in.

Marca reports that the Blues had the player watched in the 2014 World Cup qualifier between Venezuela and Chile.

Rondon failed to make an impact at the game as his side recorded a 2-0 defeat, but the mere fact Chelsea officials traveled to South America to watch the player in action shows they are keen.

The 22-year-old joined Malaga from Las Palmas in July 2010 and has quickly developed into an important player at La Rosaleda.

Rondon helped los Boquerones achieve a Champions League qualification by scoring 11 goals in 37 La Liga games last t…

Ballack remains as Germany captain: Loew

Chelsea star Michael Ballack will remain as Germany captain despite his criticism of Joachim Loew, the national coach Loew announced.

Ballack had flown from London to Frankfurt on Thursday to apologise directly to Loew for a newspaper interview last week in which he said the coach should show his senior players more loyalty and respect after veteran midfielder Torsten Frings was dropped.

Ballack, 32, apologised last weekend in a press release, but Loew insisted the Chelsea midfielder fly to the German Football Federation (DFB) offices in Frankfurt to meet face-to-face on Thursday and explain his comments.

Munich newspaper Abendzeitung claimed on Thursday that Ballack was set to resign as Germany captain, but remain in the team with Bayern Munich defender Phil…

Kluivert urges Barca to sign Goncalo Ramos or Firmino

Patrick Kluivert has urged Barcelona to sign either Goncalo Ramos or Roberto Firmino at the end of the season.

Barca are on course to be crowned LaLiga champions after a big recruitment drive that saw them bring in the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.

Lewandowski has scored 25 goals in his first season with the Blaugrana, leading the line superbly and demonstrating the sort of clinical finishing that has made him one of the best strikers in the world.

Former Barca striker Kluivert wants the Catalan giants to add more firepower by landing Benfica striker Ramos or long-serving Liverpool frontman Firmino, who will leave Anfield when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The ex-Netherlands international told the Barca Blaugranes portal: Fina…

Kimmich: Bayern is more attractive than Premier League

Joshua Kimmich said remaining with Bayern Munich is a far more attractive option than making a switch to the Premier League.

Kimmich, 21, has reportedly attracted interest from several English clubs after impressing for Bayern in 2015-16.

The midfielder made the move to the Bavarian club at the start of last season, moving from RB Leipzig, and featured in 36 appearances across all competitions.

He was even called into the Germany national team for their Euro 2016 campaign, starting four games as the side crashed out in the semi-finals against hosts France.

But ahead of the new season, Kimmich insists his immediate future remains in the Bundesliga.

Making a major contribution to Bayern is more important to me than a transfer abroad, Kimmic…
